Start of a training series in paediatric radiotherapy
For colleagues from low and middle income countries
On the initiative of Prof. Beate Timmermann and PROS, a training series on radiotherapy in children for low and medium income countries was launched on June 27, 2024.
International cooperation
The event was organized in cooperation with the PROS LMIC (Pediatric Radiation Oncology Society) working group of the SIOP (International Society for Pediatric Oncology) Global Health Network. The training series was designed specifically for radiotherapists from low- and middle-income countries, for whom participation in existing training events is often impossible.
Expanding medical exchange
Prof. Beate Timmermann launched the lecture series with an introductory lecture entitled “Principles of Paediatric Radiotherapy” in front of over 200 participants, mainly from Africa, South Africa, Asia and Latin America. Almost 700 people have already registered for the training series. “This is a great response, which shows how important it is to target courses at colleagues in low-income countries, where the care of cancer patients causes many problems. Through this training series, we can give our colleagues more confidence in the treatment of children with cancer and create a platform for medical exchange,” says Prof. Beate Timmermann.
Start of the training series
Further lectures on radiotherapy for various solid tumors in children will be held at quarterly intervals in the near future; many experts from countries such as the USA, Denmark and the Netherlands have already agreed to give lectures. Dr Bilal Qureshi from PROS LMIC comments: “This is an exciting initiative from Prof Timmerman and senior PROS colleagues, aimed at supporting and improving paediatric radiotherapy in LMIC”
